How to Express Frustration Without Losing Connection

By Karen Millon — Certified Professional Coach · October 16, 2026 · 4 min read

Communicating your frustration is not the goal, preserving the connection while expressing your needs is!

One of the worst pieces of relationship advice we've been given is: never go to bed angry. Just communicate. Because, see, communication without emotional awareness and emotional regulation can actually create more damage.

You see, no one taught us how to communicate. We were simply told: talk about it, express, don't repress, never go to bed angry, communicate, communicate.

Communication is not the goal

But here's what I've learned from my first failed marriage: communication is not the goal. Connection is.

When you communicate while angry, you may think that expressing your frustration ("You're a mess." "Get a job." "You're never here.") is effective, but it's not.

What your partner hears

You may be communicating, but your partner is hearing something else. They hear: I'm not good enough for you. I'm failing you. I'm not safe with you.

And when someone feels repeatedly criticized, attacked and judged, emotional safety starts to disappear. Then comes resentment, then distance, then disconnection. And eventually, intimacy can disappear too, because your spouse's body and nervous system cannot relax under criticism and judgment. Their body doesn't feel safe around you.

Healthy communication requires more than talking

See, what the advice meant to say is that healthy communication requires more than talking.

  • It requires self-awareness.
  • It requires emotional regulation.
  • It requires the vulnerability of understanding why you're mad, what is being triggered.
  • It requires curiosity and the ability to express what is happening inside you without attacking the person in front of you.

So, see, the goal is not "How can I make my partner hear me?" The goal is "How do we create enough safety for us to hear each other?"

It can be learned

But nobody taught us this. So there's no shame. Healthy communication is a skill, and like every other skill that you've mastered, it can be learned.

I've learned the skills in my own relationships, and I have helped countless high achievers use them to transform conflict into connection and to bring back and rebuild intimacy in their marriages or their relationships.

If you're here and ready to do this work, it would be an honor for me to support you.

No shame. No blame. With curiosity, awareness, skills and practice.
